What Are the Characteristics of a Masonry Structure?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rammed earth construction is a building tradition dating back thousands of years, in which materials are expertly placed. These primitive structures, which represent a part of our cultural heritage, utilize materials such as stone, soil, sand, and mud. By examining the details of this method, which produces sustainable structures of high aesthetic value, we will explore the answers to the questions: <strong>What is rammed earth construction<\/strong>, and <strong>what are its characteristics<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a Masonry Structure?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masonry structures are buildings constructed from materials with very low strength and flexibility. Since masonry structures lack a skeletal system, the load is transferred to the ground through the materials used in the walls. Because these structures have no columns, the walls assume the primary load-bearing role, and each material fulfills its specific function. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although masonry structures are preferred, particularly in the Southern and Eastern Anatolia regions of our country, because they are economical, fire-resistant, and can be constructed quickly, they are not sufficiently flexible or durable to withstand forces such as tension, shear, and expansion; as a result, they may be prone to collapse or structural failure in the event of sudden damage.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The structural systems of masonry buildings consist of walls, floors, and lintels. In masonry buildings, floors are typically designed with beams and rest on lintels located above the walls. Although rare, ribbed floors are sometimes used in masonry buildings. Walls, designed as composite elements, bear the loads from the floors and transfer them to the foundation.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gokozinsaat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/yigma-yapi-nedir-yigma-yapi-ozellikleri-nelerdirblog.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gokozinsaat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/yigma-yapi-nedir-yigma-yapi-ozellikleri-nelerdirblog.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.gokozinsaat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/yigma-yapi-nedir-yigma-yapi-ozellikleri-nelerdirblog-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gokozinsaat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/yigma-yapi-nedir-yigma-yapi-ozellikleri-nelerdirblog-768x510.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Types of Masonry Structures?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masonry structures are classified according to the materials used in their load-bearing walls. Some of these types include: <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Unreinforced Masonry Buildings:<\/strong> These are structures built using only stone and mortar, without the use of reinforcing bars. In unreinforced masonry buildings, high compressive strength and compatibility with other materials are of utmost importance. Unreinforced masonry buildings are commonly found in the rural areas of our country.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stacked Stone Buildings:<\/strong> These are structures in which stone is used for load-bearing walls and the spaces between the stones are filled with masonry mortar. The most important feature of stacked stone buildings is that they are highly effective in terms of sound insulation, thermal insulation, and fire resistance. Since these types of buildings lack flexibility, they have low seismic resistance. The vast majority of stone masonry buildings preferred in the rural areas of our country were constructed in the past. In accordance with current earthquake regulations, stone may now only be used in the building\u2019s foundation and basement levels.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Adobe Buildings:<\/strong> Used in rural areas such as towns and villages, adobe is a building material made from a mixture of mud and straw that is poured into molds and then left to dry in the sun. Primarily used in rural homes, adobe is preferred because it retains heat in the winter and is made from readily available materials. The biggest disadvantage of adobe, however, is its lack of water resistance. Sudden changes in air temperature can cause damage to adobe structures. Although the use of adobe structures has been banned in our country since 2018, it is still possible to come across such buildings in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brick Masonry Structures:<\/strong> Brick, a ceramic-based material produced by firing inorganic silicates and metal oxides, is highly resistant to high pressure and should not have a water absorption capacity exceeding 15%. A higher water absorption value will not only reduce the brick\u2019s bonding strength but also result in a wall with low load-bearing capacity. Although brick walls are strong in load-bearing capacity, they are not earthquake-resistant due to their low flexibility.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, buildings were constructed using hand-molded bricks. These bricks were produced in an unregulated manner at local kilns. Hand-molded bricks have very low compressive strength and high water absorption. Over time, as technology advanced, hand-molded bricks began to be replaced by factory-made bricks. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In stacked brick buildings, the entire load is borne by the walls. Therefore, structures must be built in compliance with earthquake codes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reinforced Masonry Buildings:<\/strong> The only difference between these and unreinforced masonry buildings is the use of reinforced concrete beams in their construction. While reinforced masonry buildings closely resemble reinforced concrete structures, the reinforced concrete sections in them are extremely small. The use of these buildings is particularly important in our country, which is located in an earthquake-prone region.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Buildings with Reinforced Panel Systems:<\/strong> These are structures created by assembling aerated concrete panels to support load-bearing walls. In these buildings, the beams and panels combine to form the structure. Aerated concrete, which belongs to the lightweight concrete category, is highly resistant to seismic activity. Its ease of installation and cost-effectiveness are among the main reasons this material is preferred.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on local conditions and project specifics, the materials to be used in the construction of each building must be determined by a team of experts.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Characteristics of Masonry Construction?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughcast structures, created by combining natural and unprocessed materials, stand out for their many features. Let\u2019s take a closer look at these features.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since there are no other materials on the wall, it is easy to paint and clean.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It provides an aesthetically pleasing appearance for building exteriors, both structurally and architecturally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is built at a very low cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since it is simpler to construct than other buildings, it is completed quickly and requires less labor.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are highly effective at providing thermal and sound insulation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They can be built to be durable and safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since they are made from readily available materials, they are sustainable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They must be regularly organized and monitored.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masonry structures can be made safer and more durable by combining traditional construction methods with modern techniques.
